Food Glorious Food
Now I don’t often blog about food, but after last nights experience I think I may well start. Having moved to Westminster I went looking, with my friend Sam, for something to eat. We stumbled by chance across Atami, a Japanese restaurant on the corner of Monck Street and Great Peter Street in SW1. After peering through the window we decided to venture in.
We were promptly shown to our table where we were presented with a great menu including some dishes that were "with a twist" such as soft-shell crab in sushi - rolls, cold sea water sake, and other delightful concoctions. We ordered a random selection of sushi for our main, some edamame, a tuna tartare for starters and a dish of "razor shells" that the waiter recommended. We also ordered some Sake that was made from salt water that tasted clean and wonderfully cooling in the oppressive London heat.
The service here buzzes and bustles, and we had our Edamame (steamed salted edible soy beans) in no time, followed by out tuna tartare. This was quite a small portion, but the taste was sensational. At 12,50 it was a little pricy, but magnificent. Then came the razorshells with ginger and spring onion vinaigrette. This was obviously a signature dish, beautifully presented, and a flavour that can only be described as stunning. The subtle richness of the flesh was deliciously accentuated by the vinaigrette. At the perfect moment the sushi arrived, including a generous portion of soft-shell crab rolls that were outstanding. The sake proved to be a perfect accompaniment to this unusual dish. The remainder of our sushi was beautifully presented, fantastically fresh and tasted wonderful. We had no room for deserts. We had coffee and tea in the lounge area which has a great ambience, good music and tasteful bamboo decor.
The bill was, for two under the £100 mark, which for food of this standard seemed very little. I immediately booked 6 seats for Saturday night, as Sam and I both agreed this was a great find and we were anxious to return and reacquaint ourselves with a special dining experience. Next time I thnk I will try the scallops and the Yellow tail and of course with more friends to spread the word Im sure that Atami will do well.
8/10 - good stuff, I’ll be back!!
I also found another diner who had blogged this too also giving 8/10!
